Here’s What Lena Headey Really Thinks of Last Sunday’s Episode of ‘Game of Thrones’

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

Actress Lena Headey is finally speaking out about Cersei’s death in this week’s episode of Game of Thrones.

Here’s what you need to know: In season eight, episode five of GoT, Cersei (Headey) seemingly perished alongside her brother, Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), when the building collapsed as a result of Daenerys’s (Emilia Clarke) dragon attack on King’s Landing.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 45-year-old actress discussed the penultimate episode and explained how her final moments represent her character’s journey on the show.

“She starts off in this final season trapped in a web of her own making, as is usual with Cersei,” Headey said. “She’s desperately unhappy and everything that’s happened becomes more real than it ever has for her. She starts to lose control of the situation. She’s destroyed every good alliance, connection, love in her life—she was always destined to be alone. And until the very, very last minute, she is—as ever—in denial of what’s actually happening.”

The GoT star went on to say that she originally had “mixed” feelings about her final scene, adding, “I wanted her to have some big piece or fight with somebody.”

Nevertheless, Headey eventually came to terms with the full-circle ending. “The more we talked about it, the more it seemed like the perfect end for her,” she continued. “They came into the world together and now they leave together.”

So poetic, yet so tragic. The series finale of Game of Thrones will air on Sunday, May 19, on HBO.
