Preeminent girl crush Kristen Bell knows a thing or two about being a stand-up Samaritan and designing whimsical kitchenware (oh, and you know, acting). And as a shock to no one, she’s also got some pretty darn salient thoughts on beauty and fashion.
In a recent interview, Bell opened up about broaching the topic of makeup with her two young daughters, Lincoln (4) and Delta (2), who have been emulating their fairy-princess mama by borrowing her stash more and more frequently. “Mostly they’re just into lipstick right now,” said Bell. "And 90 percent of the time, they ask, which is great.”
While she’s happy to have the girls smoosh down her lipsticks in the name of fun, she’s also using their interest as an opportunity to dig a little deeper. “We try to talk about the reasons kids don’t wear lipsticks or don’t wear makeup,” said Bell. “It’s about understanding the concept that usually makeup, for an old woman like me, is to cover dark circles—but it’s also about fun expression. It’s a bigger issue than just wearing makeup. It’s understanding what other people culturally think makeup means when they see a young girl with makeup on.”
The Frozen star went on to share that she has set aside some pretty special wardrobe pieces for the girls when they come of age. But until then? She’s wholeheartedly making like organizational guru Marie Kondo and editing out any belongings that don’t “spark joy”. “To be honest if I’m not loving it, I want someone else to love it,” Bell said.
Looking for any takers, KB? We’ll happily oblige.
