‘Black-ish’ Creator Kenya Barris Is Working on a New Series for Netflix (& It Sounds So Good)

Kenya Barris is teaming up with Netflix for a brand-new series—and it's nothing like his Black-ish spin-offs.

According to Deadline, the producer and director will be working with Power's Curtis Jackson (50 Cent) to develop a new show based on Jackson and Robert Greene's book, The 50th Law. The semi-autobiography, which debuted at number five on The New York Times Bestseller List, details Jackson's inspiring rise to fame and includes several anecdotes from historical figures, from Malcolm X to James Baldwin.

Since the project is still in the early stages, casting details have yet to be revealed. However, we do know that Barris and Hale Rothstein (who worked together on Netflix's blackAF) will write the script and serve as executive producers alongside Jackson and Greene. Also, Lionsgate TV will be producing the series through Jackson’s deal at Starz.

The 50th Law is just one of multiple projects that Barris will be spearheading in the near future. In October of 2020, he announced that he'd be directing and producing a biopic on the late comedian Richard Pryor. And in September, it was confirmed that the Barris is currently working on third spin-off called Black-ish, which will be called Old-ish. The comedy series will follow Earl and Ruby Johnson as they move into a gentrifying neighborhood in L.A. Both Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis will reprise their roles.

While discussing the spin-off during a virtual event, Barris said, “Everyone’s been wanting to see Pop and Ruby together because they’re basically together anyway. It’s the weirdest divorce I’ve ever seen in my life. And truthfully in real life there is a huge recurrence of second time around in the older demographic…people are living longer and having experiences later in life, and it was just finding something that we felt we could tell a good story [about], that fit with the brand and what we’re doing.”

Sounds like we've got some amazing new content to look forward to!
