Kelly Ripa Is Hosting ‘Live’ All Alone—Here’s What Happened to Ryan Seacrest

UPDATE: As of October 21, Kelly Ripa is no longer hosting alone—read the latest update here.

This week’s episodes of Live with Kelly and Ryan might look a tad different than usual, and here’s why.

Producers posted a behind-the-scenes video on the talk show’s official Instagram account, featuring Kelly Ripa explaining why she’s not accompanied by her co-host, Ryan Seacrest. Since production is following strict social distancing protocol, it seems he won’t be able to return until he can produce a negative COVID-19 test result. (Did he test positive at some point? Perhaps he got a little too rowdy over the weekend?)

In the clip, Ripa reveals the reason behind Seacrest’s absence on Live. “We follow all these restrictions now, so this is one,” she says. “We have to wait until it comes back negative before he can get in here.” And we apparently have to wait for a more detailed explanation.

Fans flooded the comments section with words of praise for both Ripa and Seacrest. Some sent their well wishes to the American Idol host, writing, “Oh my!!! Hope test results OK.” Others applauded Ripa’s ability to adjust to the circumstances: “You guys are hysterical this morning! Love the relationship between Kelly and Gelman!”

Live with Kelly and Ryan recently resumed normal production after months of virtual filming due to the coronavirus pandemic. Of course, the new guidelines aren’t totally flawless. (For example, Seacrest’s hand kept disappearing during the premiere because he’s not actually sitting next to Ripa.)

More Ripa? You won’t hear us complaining.
