Urban posted a video of the performance on his personal Instagram account and revealed that the cover was not planned.
“Every now and then you hear a song that you love and wish you’d written…” he wrote in the caption. “And a HUGE thx to my band as well—we didn’t get to rehearse so…this is us fully winging it—KU #Lover @taylorswift.”
When Swift caught wind of the news, the singer re-shared the video on her Instagram Story and wrote, “Keith Urban covering Lover flawlessly. I am screaming. This is so beautiful.”
The track is from Swift’s seventh studio album, Lover (duh). Although it hit shelves less than a month ago, the new record is already making history.
Shortly after the release, Lover surpassed the A Star Is Born soundtrack as this year’s top-selling album in the U.S., with nearly 500,000 sales in its first two days. Since Swift’s last record, Reputation, sold 1.2 million copies in its first week, many believe that her new release is just beginning to take off.
If you need us, we’ll be listening to Urban’s version of “Lover” on repeat.
