Kate Middleton Broke a Major Royal Rule at Her Latest Event in London

If you're wondering why Princess Catherine can't take selfies, it's because there's an unofficial royal rule that prevents her from taking fan photos and signing autographs while on duty. If you recall, in 2017, Meghan Markle reportedly declined a photo opportunity and told a fan, "We're not allowed to do selfies." And in that same year, Greg Agnew, who attended a Royal Garden Party, revealed to Insider that these rules were put in place to avoid having people "turn their backs" on the royals.

Agnew said, “The one thing they talked about a lot was no selfies, and the reason was that they didn’t want people turning their backs to the royal family and the queen. And that was very important to them. You do not turn your back on the royal family, and you do not attempt to walk up and talk to them.”

Even so, the "no selfie" rule isn't strictly enforced, since it has already been broken quite a few times.

For instance, in addition to Princess Catherine's most recent selfies at Streets of Growth and the Foxcubs Nursery, she and her husband Prince William also took a few snaps with royal fans while visiting Scotland to promote mental health in 2022. And during their visit to Jamaica, they happily posed for a selfie with the country's bobsleigh and skeleton team.
