Kate May Be Responsible for Jack's Death on ‘This Is Us’ & Here's the Heartbreaking Reason Why

kate reason for jack death this is us

We already knew that adult Kate (Chrissy Metz) feels extremely guilty about her father Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death on This Is Us, but these new episode clues are leading us to believe that it may, in fact, be her fault.

Here’s what you need to know: In episode 12 of the hit NBC series, we learned that there are no batteries in the Pearson family smoke alarm. Sure, we could easily pinpoint a few possible explanations, but several fans on a This Is Us Facebook page were quick to point out that teenage Kate could be the culprit.

Could it be that Kate took the batteries out of the device so she could smoke cigarettes to lose weight? Or did she need them to record her audition tape? Dubious indeed.

Another theory for Kate’s guilt? The dog. You see, last night’s episode 13 introduced us to the emotional issues Kate has with her childhood dog. And since next week’s episode will detail the Pearson family’s terrifying escape from their burning home, we can’t help but wonder if Jack sacrificed himself to save the dog.

This Is Us returns to NBC on Sunday, February 4, at 9 p.m. ET. (Ugly-cry guaranteed.)
