Julianne Hough is ringing in the holiday season with a ’do that’s brand-new to her but totally nostalgic for us.

The professional dancer just debuted a darker, more root-y blonde bob that’s modeled after Claire Danes’s from My So-Called Life.

For a frame of reference, here’s a shot of her locks before her go-to hairstylist Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One Salon in Los Angeles helped her go ’90s.

1. Before

When we spoke to Hough in person last month, she was rocking a bright ashy blonde highlighted bob with blunt ends and a slight dark blonde gradient at the roots. It was on-trend, beachy and just a little bit piece-y.

Now, Hough’s “bob is structured, blunt and pretty much all one length of hair,” Capri told PureWow during a Celebeauty Sit-Down.

2. After

The celebrity hairstylist explained the inspiration behind Hough’s mini makeover, calling it, “’90s chic” and saying it’s “giving us a little Claire Danes My So-Called Life [with] Wynona Rider in Reality Bites.” Those are two prime beauty references if we do say so ourselves.

Capri went on to describe Hough’s new look as a “simple and chic, thick, blunt, classic bob,” adding that the “modern twist is the way you style it to not be super perfect and just have a little flare.”

Sure, it’s still a blonde bob, but her new iteration is shorter and something akin to an updated ombré with dark blonde roots at her crown. There are sandy blonde baby lights sprinkled in that fade into blonde all over color. It looks like Capri even threw in a few lowlights. Although we loved Hough’s brighter tresses, this new look really makes her icy blue eyes pop.

Capri explained the story behind the color, saying, “Julianne is letting her natural roots grow out to try something different. We’ve never done the blunt chic bob one length in over ten years of working together! I love that we can continue to do something new even after all this time together.”

So do we.
