Joanna Gaines Reflects on Becoming a New Mom (Again) at 40

When Joanna Gaines found out she was pregnant at age 40 it wasn’t just the term “geriatric pregnancy” that threw her for a loop. It was the fact that she hadn’t expected to have any more children.

In the forthcoming fall issue of Magnolia Journal, the mom of five opens up about dipping her toes back into new motherhood and reveals just how much of a surprise her 1-month-old son, Crew, was.

“I truly believed I was done. And yet, after eight years, here I am with a newborn in my arms,” the Home Body author writes.

Gaines, who also shares Drake (13), Duke (10), Ella (11) and Emmie (8) with her husband, Chip, opened up further about her serendipitous pregnancy, writing, “Chip and I made a choice to take some time off this past year because it seemed best for us in that season—even though we knew it would stretch us to stay still. Only a few weeks later I found out I was pregnant.”

Ultimately, Gaines muses that mothering Crew feels like “the first time all over again,” and is grateful that her pregnancy “forced her to slow down.”

Silver linings aside, we can all agree that doctors should really find another term to explain conceiving over the age of 35.
