‘GoT’ Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Says Big Facial Hair Changes Are Afoot for Jaime Lannister

Jaime Lannister’s season eight mantra on Game of Thrones is basically “new facial hair, who dis.”

In a recent interview with Shortlist, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) revealed that the Kingslayer will sport a full beard in the final season, and it just might mean something about his character’s fate.

“I’m shooting the last season of Thrones. Generally speaking, I’m not crazy-hairy, but I have a full beard. Call me Hairy Styles,” Coster-Waldau joked.

So why does facial hair have anything to do with the Game of Thrones plotline? Well, this isn’t the first time Coster-Waldau has undergone a hair makeover that paralleled a shift in his character’s destiny.

The season three finale featured Jaime with a Keith Urban–style layered bob and full-on facial hair. His rugged look was meant to signify the shift that had occurred in him during his summer vacay on the road with Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie).

As Coster-Waldau recalled in the interview, “He was due a haircut. Especially after spending two seasons dragged through the mud. There was a big change in the character, so a haircut is a way to signal that.”

Then, in season four, Jaime ditched his Justin Bobby look in favor of a fresh chop. Anyone else noticing he gets gussied up every time he comes home to his sister/lover, Cersei (Lena Headey)?

Only time will tell what season eight of GoT has in store for Jaime, his facial hair and the Seven Kingdoms.

In the meantime, we’ll be poring over these Game of Thrones pics for more hidden meaning.
