It’s been a hella long time (11 months to be exact) since Insecure last made us nod our head in solidarity, but good news: The realest comedy in premium cable returns to HBO for its third season on Sunday, August 12, at 10:30 p.m. So, before we start bemoaning how much we relate to each cringe-worthy moment of Issa’s (Issa Rae) life, refresh your memory on all things Insecure season two here.
Everything You Need to Know Before Watching the ‘Insecure’ Season 3 Premiere

Picking Up The Pieces
ICYMI: Lawrence (Jay Ellis) left Issa after finding out she cheated on him with Daniel (Y’lan Noel), and she spent the first half of the season trying to earn his forgiveness (and also doing a lot of dating). He found solace in a new relationship with his bank teller bae (DomiNque Perry) and tried to forget Issa, although it didn’t prove to be easy judging from their several failed attempts at rekindling. Issa was, however, able to repair things with Daniel (more on that later).

Office Politics
After already feeling unappreciated and undervalued at her law firm, Molly (Yvonne Orji) accidentally received a Caucasian male co-worker’s paycheck and learned that he makes a significant amount more than her, although they have similar qualifications and experience. So, she looked for a new job. But when the partners at her firm found out she was on the prowl for a better opportunity, they tried to tempt her into staying by offering her a “rising star” award instead of a raise.

It’s Complicated
Issa and Lawrence aren’t the only ones trying to sort out their romantic lives. Molly was continually let down by the dating world, so when a childhood friend named Dro (Sarunas J. Jackson) with an open marriage expressed interest in her, she took the bait. Ultimately she decided the situation with Dro is more emotionally taxing than she’d like, so she hooked up with her colleague Quentin (Lil Rey Howery) as a distraction.

More Than Just A Couch
The season finale saw Issa moving out of the apartment she shared with Lawrence because she could no longer afford to pay the rent solo. In an act of good will, she offered to let him keep the couch they bought together and said she wouldn’t be there when he came to pick it up—but she was. They said their goodbyes and Issa imagined an alternate reality where he got down on one knee and professed his undying love for her. That doesn’t happen. Lawrence left, and Issa heads to Daniel’s place to see if she can crash on his couch until she gets her life together.
There, now you’re all caught up and ready to enjoy the season three premiere of Insecure on Sunday, August 12, at 10:30 p.m. We’re excited AF.
