In the original film trilogy, Donald Sutherland plays the older version of President Snow, who is in charge of the Hunger Games. Every year, two adolescent tributes are chosen from all twelve districts to fight to the death. Throughout the series, Snow remains at constant odds with Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence. And now, Blyth will take on the role of the soon-to-be tyrannical leader.
Francis Lawrence, who directed the last three films in the franchise, will return to direct the prequel. He recently told People Blyth’s performance will completely change how viewers view President Snow.
“Coriolanus Snow is many things—a survivor, a loyal friend, a cutthroat, a kid quick to fall in love, and a young man ambitious to his core,” he explained. “Tom’s take on the character showed us all the complex ambiguities of this young man as he transforms into the tyrant he would become.”
The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins will serve as the executive producer of the new film, with Michael Arndt serving as the screenwriter and Nina Jacobson will produce.
Be sure to mark your calendars because The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is coming to a theater near you on November 17, 2023.
