Here Are 3 Great Ways to Help Kids Affected by Hurricane Harvey
Watching the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey is so heartbreaking, but no matter how far away you are, there are important ways that you can help. Here, three easy ways to support families that have been affected by the storm:
Help Provide Diapers
Little ones go through a lot of diapers, and shelters often don’t have enough to go around. Help parents keep their babies dry and comfortable by supporting the Texas Diaper Bank, an organization that has been providing assistance to families in need for over ten years. Donate directly to the organization on its website or order diapers on Amazon and have them sent to its headquarters at 5415 Bandera Rd., Suite 504, San Antonio, TX 78238. It may seem like a small thing to do, but as any parent knows, having a happy and healthy baby means the world.
Donate to Save the Children
Save the Children, an NGO, has decades of experience providing relief and support to children around the world and estimates that after Harvey, as many as 20,000 people will seek shelter (with as many as half of them requiring shelter for up to a month). The organization has set up a specific fund dedicated to helping families and young victims of Hurricane Harvey—donate online here or text “hurricane” to the number 20222 to make a $25 donation. A $100 gift will provide a crib for a baby in a shelter, help supply a safe space for 20 displaced children and give many other items that little survivors need. (But any amount, no matter how big or small, helps.)
Help Feed Families
There are a lot of food banks across the state providing much-needed relief to families that have been affected by the hurricane. Houston Food Bank can provide three meals for every $1 of support, and Feeding Texas is a statewide nonprofit organization that works alongside state and federal relief efforts. Please note that while food items are appreciated, donating money allows food banks to use your gift most efficiently.
