If you, like us, binge-watched your way through the second season of Stranger Things in a matter of 48 hours, then we highly recommend you take a step back and rewatch the epic—yet totally subtle—Goonies reference snuck in by the show’s creators.
Here’s what you need to know: Stranger Things season two introduced us to a new character, Joyce Byers’s boyfriend, Bob (Sean Astin). Astin is best known for his sensational role as Mikey in the 1985 cult classic The Goonies, so naturally, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer couldn’t resist throwing in a reference to the film.
Cut to season two, episode five when Bob is helping Joyce decode Will’s (Noah Schnapp) drawings. He discovers the scribbles form a map of Hawkins and makes a subtle reference to One-Eyed Willy. Bob says, “Yeah? What’s at the X? Buried treasure?”
The best part? Astin doesn’t blame the Duffer brothers for unabashedly incorporating such blatant ’80s nostalgia. “They weren’t afraid to have me point to the X on Will’s map and go, ‘Hey, is that a pirate treasure map?’ So I don’t think they went over the line, but they went right up to it,” he said in an interview with Yahoo.
Shameless ’80s reference or not, Matt Duffer says the end result was totally worth it. He told BuzzFeed, “We’re like misbehaving children. I was like, ‘I know I’m gonna get slapped for that by the critics, but I don’t care, I have to make it.’ It just presented itself, it was too easy.”
Now if only Dustin named his pet Demodog Sloth instead of Dart.
