Glenn Close Reveals She Was Raised in a Cult on Prince Harry & Oprah's New Docuseries

Prince Harry and Oprah Winfrey debuted their new multi-part mental health docuseries, The Me You Can't See, on Apple+ this weekend, and the final episode includes a shocking personal narrative from actress Glenn Close.

The 101 Dalmatians actress opened up about the fact that she was raised in a cult and how the experience continues to affect her to this day. “From when I was seven to when I was 22, I was in this group called MRA [Moral Re-Armament] and it was basically a cult," Close says of the religious group. "Everybody spouted the same things and there was a lot of rules, a lot of control...It was really awful."

While Close is now far removed from MRA, she believes that her three marriages failed in part because of the lasting trauma. “Because of the devastation, emotional and psychological of the cult, I have not been successful in my relationships and finding a permanent partner and I am sorry about that," she reveals.

While Close believes the extreme values, or "absolutes" of the cult left her family very broken up, she has now found solace in her family as an adult. “I've come back to my family. I'm connected to them, when I used to be a whole country away from them for all of my career.”

The Fatal Attraction star currently lives with her sisters, Tina and Jessie, in Montana. Here, they are working to help the people of Bozeman, the town where Close spent a large portion of her childhood. “This issue, if it's in our family and if we're dealing with this kind of pain and this kind of fright and this kind of sense of shame, there are millions of other families who are going through the same thing,” Close says.

As Close tries to help others who may be dealing with mental health struggles, she doesn't harbor any resentment towards her parents for the environment she grew up in. She told the Hollywood Reporter, “I always thought, the way life works, the burden of forgiveness is on the child. That’s the way it goes. Forgiveness is probably the most revolutionary concept there is right now in our world. Because without forgiveness, you just perpetuate what has been before. You [have to] say, ‘It’s going to stop with me.'”
