Remember in seventh grade, when the class clown would punch numbers into your calculator, then turn it upside-down to spell the word “boobie”? (Just us?) Welp, science has confirmed that what was funny back then is just as hilarious now.

That’s according to a new study by the University of Warwick in the UK that analyzed close to 5,000 words in the English language to find out which ones were deemed the funniest.

For the study, researchers asked more than 800 participants to look at the selection of words and score each one on a scale of 1 (not funny at all) to 5 (most funny). The subjects were asked to respond purely based on instinct, without giving the words too much thought.

So which word came out on top of the LOL-worthy list? Drumroll, please… According to researchers, the funniest word in the English language is: booty. (OK, we’ll admit that we giggled a little even just typing that.)

And before you ask—the average age of participants in the study was 35, not 13.

After booty, the words that scored the highest in terms of funniness were (in descending order): tit, booby, hooter, nitwit, twit, waddle, tinkle, bebop, egghead, ass and twerp.

Which basically proves that your middle-school self was right all along—silly words are just too funny. Don’t think the list is chuckle-worthy? Don't be such a twerp.
