It’s no secret Daenerys Targaryen is one badass lady on Game of Thrones. But if anyone has learned a thing or two from the character’s inspiring ways, it’s Khaleesi’s IRL alter ego, Emilia Clarke.
In a recent interview, Clarke discussed the impact of her iconic role and revealed the character has opened her eyes to female empowerment and feminism. She said, “It’s given me a real insight into what it feels like to be a woman who stands up to inequality and hate. And as [Daenerys] has become more empowered as a woman, you can’t hide anymore.”
The 31-year-old actress also admitted that she’s no stranger to seeing women in powerful positions, considering her mother was the breadwinner of the family. She continued, “That’s the lens through which I’ve been fortunate enough to view the world. It’s only when you go to school that you're like, ‘Oh, that’s different, that’s weird.’”
Although Khaleesi’s woman-cum-dragon power is fictional, Clarke hopes her character will benefit the industry’s focus on female empowerment. She said, “You are adding to the voices that are going to make people realize an equal society is what we’re aiming for.”
Couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
