There's a Fan Theory that Elsa Will Be Gay in ‘Frozen 2’: Let's Look at the Evidence

ICYMI: Disney just dropped the first teaser trailer for Frozen 2, and oh em gee, you guys, we’re in for a delicious sequel.

And ever since the first movie’s release in 2013, Disney fans have begged for Elsa to have a female love interest. Some even speculated that Elsa’s song “Let It Go” sounded very much like a coming out song and took to Twitter to share their opinions using the hashtags #GiveElsaAGirlfriend and #MakeElsaGay.

Even one of the film’s directors, Jennifer Lee, said back in March of last year that she’s aware of the push for Elsa to define her sexuality and she’s not opposed to it.

Fans of the film were quick to point out the major character changes in the new trailer for Frozen 2. Namely, Elsa now wears pants underneath her dress, for which Twitter was ecstatic.

“THEY GAVE HER PANTS I WANNNNA CRY ELSA TRULY IS MY QUEEN” one user posted. Another one wrote, “ELSA IN A SUIT. ElSA IS GAY. I DONT MAKE THE RULES.”

Yep, Elsa has a new hair do as well…and there’s a new girl (wearing pants) and boy character seen in the trailer.

While many fans are betting this girl is Elsa’s new girlfriend (possibly voiced by newcomer to the vocal cast Evan Rachel Wood), some are doubtful we’ve actually gotten a glimpse of Elsa’s S.O. yet since the character seems a little too young.

Even Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa in the movies, said she hopes the character is a lesbian.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2016, Menzel was asked what she thinks about the theory. “I think it’s great,” she said. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”

In an interview with The Huffington Post, director Lee revealed there’s a chance Elsa might be openly gay in the forthcoming film.

“I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film―that it’s creating dialogue,” Lee said. “That Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people.”

While Lee didn’t confirm whether Elsa will define herself as a lesbian in Frozen 2, she did give fans hope, saying, “We have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things.”

Your move, Disney.
