'Dawson's Creek' Is Coming to Netflix (But with a Totally New Theme Song)

Dawson's Creek fans, rejoice! The classic teen drama series is officially coming to Netflix, but it'll be missing one key component, according to the streaming platform.

While announcing the good news on Twitter, Netflix confirmed that fans can start streaming the show as soon as next month. However, the series won't include the iconic theme song. *sigh*

While Netflix did gain rights to the actual show, the same can't be said for Paula Cole’s hit song, "I Don't Want to Wait." The streaming service recently confirmed that, instead of the Canadian singer's iconic theme, fans can expect to hear Jann Arden’s "Run Like Mad" during the intro. The same song was used to replace Cole’s hit on other streaming platforms, as well as the Dawson's Creek DVDs, because of rights issues.

The original series follows a close group of high school friends who navigate through life's challenges in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts. It stars James Van Der Beek as Dawson Leery, Katie Holmes as Joey Potter, Joshua Jackson as Pacey Witter and Michelle Williams as Jen Lindley.

While some fans may not be too thrilled about the new theme swap, it appears that Dawson's Creek star Van Der Beek wouldn't mind it one bit. In 2017, he told The Guardian that hearing Cole's song triggers unpleasant flashbacks with mobs of fans. He explained, "I have a complicated relationship with that song. If I was at karaoke and it started playing there’s a part of me that still wants to go hide under the table."

He continued, "I was at a pharmacy in Philadelphia and it came on and I immediately went into a weird panic. I think it’s tied to the pandemonium that accompanied that, for which there was no off button. Walking around at that time was very tricky because one autograph could turn into a mob scene. So I walked fear of teenage girls.” Well, thankfully, he won't have to worry about hearing it on Netflix.

Dawson's Creek will be available to stream on the platform starting Nov. 1.
