Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Has Found Its Cast
Trust funds, elitism and Birkins. Oh my!
The adaptation of Kevin Kwan's utterly delicious debut novel Crazy Rich Asians has officially announced its cast, which (kudos to Warner Brothers) is all Asian and all fabulous. The insanely anticipated film is about—you guessed it—crazy rich people. But this is a breed of affluence that daren’t mingle with those déclassé reality TV housewives. No, this brand of privileged elite makes up the extravagantly superficial and incestuously gossipy world that is Singapore. And we can’t wait to see Kwan’s opulent imagery translated onto the big screen by director John M. Chu (Now You See Me 2, Step Up 2).
A little refresher or synopsis, if you please: Crazy Rich Asians tells the tale of Economics Professor Rachel Chu and her hunky boyfriend Nick Young, who travel to Nick's native Singapore for his best friend's wedding (no, Julia Roberts will not make a cameo). Much to Rachel's surprise, Nick is richer than the entire Forbes list and is the Asian equivalent of Ryan Gosling pre-Eva Mendes as far as desirability goes. Rachel must carefully navigate the waters of Asia's wealthiest, often ostentatious, families and somehow maintain her sanity along the way.
Have a gander at the principal cast members, so you too can daydream of haute couture the finest overcompensation money can buy.
Henry Golding as Nick Young
A low key professor considered the most eligible bachelor in all of Asia. NBD.
Constance Wu as Rachel Chu
Aka the poor, poor girl forced to endure the most oppressive, soul-crushing stink eye in the Pacific Rim.
Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young
Yeoh is actually the exact person we pictured as Eleanor over the mere 72 straight hours it took us to read Crazy Rich Asians. We totes should’ve been consulted for casting on this film. (hair flip).
Gemma Chan as Astrid Leong
She's Singapore's Serena van der Woodsen, but richer, like A LOT richer.
Awkwafina as Peik Lin
Rachel's college bestie whose money is a little more green than the rest of the crew.
Chris Pang as Colin
Nick's gloomy friend who's casually marrying a supermodel (see below).
Sonoya Mizuno as Araminta
A supermodel (both in the movie and IRL) whose wedding is just as anticipated as Pippa Middleton's.
