Rule of Three: Celebs Are Posing in Bathtubs to Flaunt Their OOTD Now

Rule of Three is a new franchise from PureWow that points out nascent trends before they’re all over your Instagram feed. Why Rule of Three? Well, it’s not a “trend” until a few (at least three) very familiar faces hop onboard.

Bathroom selfies. Gym selfies. Plandids. We’ve come a long way since the duck face era of Instagram, and the latest emerging social media trend is proof. Behold the #BathtubChallenge, PureWow’s inaugural Rule of Three and the most creative Outfit of the Day pose we’ve seen since, well, ever.

It all started when sartorial boundary-pusher and songstress Céline Dion posted a photo of herself reclining in a lavish bathtub sans water and fully clothed two weeks ago on April 23.

Sadly, she didn’t take the opportunity to don her scuba-inspired Paris Fashion Week ensemble. Instead, she opted for acid-wash paper-bag waist rolled-up jeans and a simple white tank top. Somehow the effect was more high-fashion than what-are-you-doing, and we weren’t the only ones who noticed.

Flash-forward to this week’s Met Gala, the gathering of fashion and culture’s elite, where Blackish star Tracee Ellis Ross was picture perfect (literally, she wore a frame) in Moschino couture. After the gala, Ross changed into something a little more comfortable—a sequin Sally LaPointe jumpsuit from the fall 2019 collection and some casual head feathers—and hopped into the tub.

Around the same time, Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil and Vile star Lily Collins was contemplating whether she should slip into a bath and relax post-gala or attend one of the exclusive after-parties.

Ultimately, she decided upon both, immersing herself, her oodles of Cartier jewelry and her Giambattista Valli gown into the tub for a photo opportunity before heading out for a night on the town.

If the Rule of Three applies, then rub-a-dub-tub photos are the next “it” Instagram pose. Thus, we’ve decided to dub it the #BathtubChallenge.

Let’s see if this one has sticking power or if it goes down the drain faster than you can say duck face.
