Gwendoline Christie on Brienne and Jaime’s Relationship: ‘I Can Feel a Million Hearts Breaking’

Warning: The night is dark and full of spoilers (specifically from Game of Thrones season 8, episode 4).

There was a lot to unpack in the hit HBO show’s latest episode, The Last of the Starks. Fortunately, there were plenty of high points (Ghost survived! Tormund has wine! Gendry becomes a Lord!), and one of our favorites was when Brienne of Tarth and Sir Jaime Lannister finally got to knock boots.

But what did actress Gwendoline Christie think about that scene?

“I haven’t been certain of the relationship between Jaime and Brienne,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It hasn’t been a love story. It’s been this strange relationship between a man and woman that’s never been able to find its true form.”

But the Star Wars actress also revealed that she was happy that it was Brienne who instigated the relationship. “I was pleased that if something happens between her and another character that she wants it.”

But, as viewers know, there was no happy ending for these two lovers. Jaime eventually leaves for King’s Landing, telling a heartbroken Brienne that Cersei’s hateful, but so is he.

“I was so upset for her,” Christie said. “I never assumed they would be together. I didn’t think that would happen. And now I can feel a million hearts breaking.” Ours included.

But in typical Brienne form, the knight gets straight back to work protecting the Starks. Who needs Jaime anyway? (Confession: We’re secretly hoping that Jaime isn’t reverting back to his old twin-sister-loving ways and instead is hoping to exact his revenge. Brienne + Jaime 4ever.)
