Billy Porter’s role as the Fairy Godmother in the live-action Cinderella is sure to be nothing like we’ve ever seen before.
PureWow sat down to chat with Porter about the movie, as well as his newest partnership with Clorox, which showcases how a healthy dose of spring queening is an essential part of self-care. The Pose star spilled some major details about the upcoming live-action take on the classic tale, which he has already wrapped filming.
“I really feel like this a ‘Cinderella’ for this generation,” he said. “It’s not based on a woman needing a man to exist. I think that message is really necessary.” The 50-year-old actor also opened up about his specific role in the film and the importance behind the character. Ladies and gentlemen, this is no ordinary Fairy Godmother.
“I’m playing the Fairy Godmother, aka the Fab G,” Porter continued. “And that cracks open a different conversation, too. You know, magic has no gender, so it’s cool. It hit me on the set. It didn’t hit me before, but it hit me on the set like how powerful that message will be.”
We first learned of Porter’s involvement in the Sony film in October 2019 when he confirmed the news during a panel at the 20th New Yorker Festival.
The film is based on an original idea from James Corden and will put a modern spin on the story. The star-studded cast also includes singer Camila Cabello in the titular role and Broadway veteran (and the voice of Frozen’s Queen Elsa) Idina Menzel is rumored to be the evil stepmother, Evelyn.
Porter, who won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for his work on the hit FX show Pose, also has quite the musical background. He starred in the lead role in the Broadway musical Kinky Boots and took home a Tony and a Grammy for his performance.
We wonder if the Fab G uses the phrase “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo.”
