This Rice Is Low-Carb, High-Protein, Gluten-Free…and Not Really Rice at All

Ah, rice. You’re damn tasty—but pure carbs. Sometimes we just need a healthier swap.

Enter Banza’s latest launch: chickpea rice. We’re big fans of their original chickpea pasta (so is Kristen Bell, NBD), so we couldn’t not give it a try.

Looking at numbers alone, brown rice has three grams of protein, three grams of fiber and 32 grams of net carbohydrates (that’s carbs minus fiber). Meanwhile, Banza’s chickpea rice has 11 grams of protein, five grams of fiber and 25 grams of net carbs. It’s gluten-free, kosher, vegan and non-GMO and cooks just like pasta (but for less time).

Here’s what our food and wellness director, Lindsay Champion, thought: “It’s definitely more orzo-like in texture and flavor…and it probably won’t satisfy your craving if you’re dying for rice, but it’s a great substitute if you have dietary restrictions or want something a little lighter and more nutritious.”

For real legume lovers, the rice also comes in a tricolor blend made from chickpeas, red lentils and green peas.
