Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay Are Reportedly Joining Melissa McCarthy in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’

It’s been a busy week for Disney fans, with tons of news about the casting of the live-action Little Mermaid. And as of yesterday, it seems two more major stars might be heading under the sea: Jacob Tremblay (Room) and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians).

Yup, the 12-year-old actor and the 31-year-old actress reportedly signed on to play Flounder and Scuttle, respectively, in Disney’s new adaptation. The big casting reveal comes only a few days after Variety exclusively broke the news that Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula. Talk about spot-on casting.

Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns) is directing the film, which will feature original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from original composer Alan Menken (with some help from Lin-Manuel Miranda).

And while Disney still has yet to find its Ariel, fans definitely have feelings and suggestions about who should play the princess. Perhaps the most common? Zendaya (who certainly fits the part with her new hair). When asked about the possibility of the role last September, the Euphoria actress was certainly up for it.

"I mean, yeah, why wouldn’t I?" she told Variety. And with a star-studded cast like this, her response should come as no surprise.

David Magee (Life of Pi) penned the latest script for the reboot, while Marc Platt (La La Land), Marshall, Miranda (Hamilton) and John DeLuca (Into the Woods) are producing.

Welcome to Atlantica, Jacob and Awkwafina!
