Take Amy Adams, for instance, who plays hard-living journalist Camille Preaker in HBO’s chillingly addictive new series Sharp Objects. When it came time for the Nocturnal Animals star to morph into the perpetually hungover Camille, she relied on salt, spit, sweat and lots of O’Doul’s, according to her on set makeup artist Kate Bisco.
“She’s supposed to be a functioning, or not so functioning, alcoholic. All that inflammation she generated on purpose,” Bisco explained. “She ate salt. She stopped exercising. She didn’t drink tons of water. And in scenes she’s drinking all the time, instead of alcohol, she’s drinking the non-alcoholic beer O’Doul’s—it’s like 20 O'Doul’s a day.”
Bisco went on to say that Adams “usually just wiped under her eyes with some spit” after getting her makeup done so she’d appear more disheveled. She also relied on the heat to keep her nice and sweaty, just like Camille would be if she were really wandering around Missouri in long sleeves in the middle of summer.
There you have it: Hollywood isn’t always glamourous.
