Once upon a time, a sheepish small-town girl with crimped box-dyed hair from Checotah, Oklahoma, took a leap of faith. She would either achieve musical stardom or suffer public humiliation, both at the hand of a hairy-chested, pompous Brit. That brave 22-year-old girl was Carrie Underwood trying out for American Idol, and Simon Cowell could throw nothing but compliments and encouragement her way.
Now Underwood is a multiplatinum, Grammy Award-winning artist, but American Idol called it quits in 2016. Despite the heavily unbalanced ratio of seasons aired to legitimate superstars produced, American Idol remained a beloved prime-time staple for 15 seasons. And now, after a mere 13 months in retirement, it’s back!
The show that brought us Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson (dare you to come up with one more) and the bizarre Chihuahua, Yorkie and American Bulldog judging trio otherwise known as Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson, has found a new home at ABC for the 2017-2018 season. *Warms up voice* Hallelujah!
The network hasn't revealed any information about the judges, a host, a premiere date or any contestants similar to William Hung. Sadly, Ryan Seacrest (and his pristinely white chompers) is far too busy charming his way through the morning show circuit alongside Kelly Ripa.
THIS...isn't really American Idol.
