Imagine getting the chance to go on American Idol and perform in front of Luke Bryan. Now imagine getting the chance to go on American Idol and perform with Luke Bryan. For one 15-year-old contestant, this was his reality.
On March 6’s episode, Ethan Payne appeared on the show and what started out as a standard audition turned into a full-on duet with judge Luke Bryan. But believe it or not, this wasn’t the first time the pair has sung together.
Before his audition, Payne revealed his diagnosis of cystic fibrosis before the age of 2, and how after many years he reached out to the Make-A-Wish Foundation to meet his idol and inspiration, Luke Bryan. His wish was granted in 2016 when Bryan invited him backstage before one of his Dallas shows. The 15-year-old even got the chance to sing on stage with him in front of thousands of his fans. Did we mention he got to take home Bryan’s guitar? Yeah, pretty cool.
Fast-forward to present day: Payne got to do it all over again. Only this time in front of Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
“He came to Texas to show me up, now he done come to American Idol to show me up,” Bryan said. Yup, he did just that.
