5 Household Expenses You Can Cut Right Now
More money in your pocket
There are so many cute spring clothes you’d like to shop for, but ugh, too many annoying household expenses keep getting in the way. Here, five costs you can actually cut from your budget so you have more wiggle room to splurge (or save).
Come on, all the shows you love are on HBO Now/Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime anyway. And since most of these services are actually A-OK with password sharing (hello, HBO Now’s CEO encourages it), you can “borrow” your friend’s password--and save about $100 a month--minus the guilt.
You shell out close to $50 a month for a device with a dial tone, but admit it, you never use the thing. Also, if the only reason you’re keeping the service is for emergencies, know this: Most landlines now run through a modem--meaning it won’t do you any good if the power goes out.
YOUR GYM MEMBERSHIP
The best part about spring is that you can actually exercise outdoors. Hit pause on your gym membership until fall and spare yourself $75 a month.
CREDIT CARD FEES
If you get a notice that your APR has increased or if you see a variety of fees on your bank statement (ATM charges! savings account transfers!),don’t ignore them--pick up the phone and complain. You’d be surprised how a five-minute conversation could save you $5…or, better yet, help you lock in a lower interest rate.
Yep, even the cost of postage adds up. (Here’s the math: Eight paper bills a month at 49 cents a stamp equals almost $50 a year down the drain, ugh.) Set up automatic payments and move on.
