Move Over, Mid-Century Modern: This ’70s Design Trend Is Back, Baby
The best interiors mix shapes, textures and time periods—and as a result, they’re interesting to look at. With that in mind, we’ve got one shortcut for a knockout living room: Curvy furniture.
ICYMI, round furnishings (think: sinuous, C-shaped sectionals and circular club chairs) are trending big time. In 2017, they dominated the world’s major design markets (High Point; Maison Objet). In 2018, they topped all the yearly trend prediction lists. And for 2019? They’re officially accessible for us non-bajillionaires, with many of our favorite retailers reproducing the signature silhouettes.
As with most great “trends,” we’re actually talking about a revival of something kinda old. Curvy furniture was all the rage in the 1970s (think: Roger Moore-era James Bond interiors). But the sculptural, feminine designs themselves are an homage to the Art Deco and French Modernism movements of the early 20th century.
Bearing in mind these storied roots—and their season after season popularity—we’ve come to think of curvy furniture as art pieces that also happen to be super comfortable. In other words, a sound investment. Here, a few of our favorite pieces you can buy right this second.
