Having a Moment: Slate
Survey says this color is primed for a takeover
While we’ll never tell you to retire your LBD (or little black pants, or little black tops, or even little black tote for that matter), with it being officially spring it might be time to update a few items to a slightly--and we mean slightly--lighter hue. Here, five reasons why we’re currently crushing on black’s younger, hipper cousin, slate.
1. It’s The Perfect Transitional Color
While wonderfully demure midi skirts and ’70s-inspired minis will always hold a place in our hearts, we're all about the wrap skirt for spring. Think of it as a pencil skirt, but with a playful--and completely wearable--twist, thanks to the cool asymmetric hemline. Look for a version in this new bluish-slate hue, and it will easily transition between seasons.
2. It’s Surprisingly Soothing
Earth tints like slate are innately relaxing, especially when teamed with cool blues and muted grays. Consider adding a touch of slate to your bedroom with a headboard, accent rug or soft cotton sheets. Be sure to report back with your improved sleeping habits.
3. It’s Better Than Stainless Steel
If you’re trying to design a kitchen that doesn’t look like the cookie-cutter version of your neighbors, it might be time to reconsider stainless steel appliances. The GE Slate line has a stone-inspired matte finish (that completely hides fingerprints) actually holds magnets (remember those?) and blends seamlessly with almost all modern color palettes (including your new pastel backsplash).
4. It’s One of Our Favorite Podcasts
OK, we know--this isn’t technically a color. But Slate Magazine’s podcast Culture Gabfest is our latest obsession and the easiest way to keep your finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist (without watching copious amounts of E! News). Join us and devote an hour to listening to culture high and low, everything from the new Ken Burn’s documentary to the new definition of a “Dad Bod.”
5. It’s a Manicure Essential
While barely-there nail art peppered the spring/summer 2016 runways, we’re still not ready to give up on our moody manicures. Slate is the perfect segue between “Lincoln Park After Dark” and a full of fist of lavender.
