It’s no secret that we love our coffee. So it was pretty weird when we recently realized we had no clue what that random little hole in the middle of our bag of beans was for. We had noticed it, sure, but in our uncaffeinated stupor we never thought to ask: Why?
Turns out, there’s a totally necessary reason for its existence.
It’s actually called a valve, and it’s there to let carbon dioxide out, allowing your freshly roasted coffee to de-gas (ew?).
The thing is, carbon dioxide is released during the roasting process, but some of it remains in the beans afterward. Once they’re packaged, they continue releasing the excess gas for about two weeks.
If not for these valves, the carbon dioxide would have nowhere to go once released, and the bags would swell up. Huh.
Well, whatever it’s for, if it allows us to have strong cup(s) every morning, we’re big fans.
