Would you willingly drink coffee mixed with olive oil?

Starbucks is betting on it with its newest line of drinks, Oleato. The caffeinated beverages combine two of Italy’s most beloved products, and fittingly, they made their debut this week at an invitation-only dinner in Milan. (According to The New York Times, the word “oleato” translates to oiled or greaseproof in Italian, and has already been trademarked by Starbucks.)

According to a press release by the brand, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was inspired by Italy’s café traditions while traveling through the country. The result is three new coffee drinks that combine the brand’s arabica beans with Partanna olive oil:

  • Oleato Caffè Latte: Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast coffee infused with extra-virgin olive oil and steamed with creamy oat milk
  • Oleato Golden Foam Cold Brew: Starbucks cold brew topped with an olive oil cold foam
  • Oleato Iced Shaken Espresso: an espresso-based iced coffee combined with olive oil-infused oat milk

TBH, we can’t quite imagine the taste of olive oil and coffee together…but then again, folks have been putting butter and even coconut oil in their morning cups for years.

But if you’re already all in on oil, you’re in luck: Starbucks will begin to introduce the Oleato beverages in select global markets, starting with Southern California this spring. See you there?
