Jennifer Garner Shares Childhood Gingersnap Recipe: ‘They’re the Perfect Autumnal Cookie’

’Tis the season for all things sugar and spice (and pumpkin, duh). So naturally, ‘Pretend Cooking Show’ host and actor Jennifer Garner is sharing another beloved recipe from her home kitchen. This time, it’s her childhood neighbor’s gingersnaps.

“I was raised by all of Rolling Hills neighborhood,” Garner, 48, writes in her Instagram post, “but my neighbors Marge and Ed had pole position. Why? 1. They were in charge of the extra key. 2. Marge’s Gingersnaps. I can still smell their cozy home, and I am happy to share Marge’s recipe with you. These, by the way, are the perfect autumnal bake-with-your-toddler cookie! Also—this dough works beautifully (says my mom) rolled out for gingerbread men and their houses.”

In the short video, Garner quickly runs through a tutorial of the recipe. “It’s late at night,” she says before she bakes a tray, “and I would be the only person eating them, so I’ll save them ’til tomorrow.” We can’t argue with that. Without further ado, here’s her (er, Marge’s) recipe:

Marge’s Gingersnaps

3/4 cup shortening
4 tablespoons molasses
1 egg
1 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon salt
Extra sugar for rolling

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry.
3. Using two spoons (“The Marge Method”) or a small ice cream scooper (“The Jen Method”), roll the dough into balls, then roll them in sugar.
4. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until done.
5. Yum.

Yep, we’re inclined to agree with step 5.
