While we’re big fans of discovering a place by getting lost in it, sometimes it pays to have a plan. Case in point: Eataly NYC Flatiron—the Italian smorgasbord that is equal parts thrilling and daunting (even for hardened New Yorkers). Here are the top five insider tips when you’re ready to go to town on all things Italian.

There are Free Wine Tastings on Thursdays

Every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., Eataly Vino (the in-house wine store) offers complimentary tastings of their rotating favorites. Right now it’s Barolo, but they also have 80-plus vintage wines in the shop for you to peruse and purchase. We recommend rounding up some coworkers and making a happy hour out of it.

They'll Teach You How to Make Gnocchi

You can sign up for all kinds of classes, like wine and cheese pairings courses and even cooking lessons for you and your kids (it’s good to start ’em young). The one you should really have your eye on? Learning how to make gnocchi from a chef. The hands-on class lets you get down and dirty, rolling out the dough and shaping it yourself. But the best tip of all is that right now you can get 15 percent off at La Scuola through December 31st with the code PUREWOW15.

They Serve Flambè-Style Drinks on the Roof

The upstairs bar and restaurant is a bit different from what you’ll find down below. Instead of tables amidst the hustle and bustle of the store itself, the 14th floor holds a space that feels all its own and has a menu that changes seasonally. In the winter, it’s dubbed Baita and is decked out in ski-lodge decor. Order one of their parampampoli cocktails (a drink that’s quite literally on fire) and pick out something from the delicious polenta bar.

You Can Carry Out a Pie from La Pizza & La Pasta

Eataly has several restaurant sections. Our favorite? The pizza. They have special-edition pies by guest chefs and restaurateurs, but their classics are just as delicious. Unlike most of the other restaurants, you can just show up and order one to go…and then head right back to your couch to finish bingeing Stranger Things.

eataly flatiron pronto

Or Grab a Quick Lunch from Pronto

If you live or work in the area, you need to know about Eataly’s new counter, Pronto. The new addition offers a bunch of ready-to-go salads, sandwiches and desserts—and the quickest way to find it is to pop into the Fifth Avenue entrance. While we definitely recommend spending time in Eataly to explore, sometimes you just need to get your hands on a panini, stat. We get it.
