Pasta Chips Are the Latest Snack That’s Trending on TikTok. Here’s How to Make Them

If you always claim the corner piece of lasagna for those crispy edges (or you’ve ever dreamed of eating pasta with your hands), pasta chips are right up your alley. Wait, what the heck are pasta chips? They’re only the latest snack trend to win over all of TikTok. Allow us to explain.

What are pasta chips?

Pasta chips are essentially just air-fried pasta, but don’t worry: They’re not like eating raw, dried noodles. The pasta is cooked to al dente and tossed in oil and seasonings before its trip in the air fryer, so the texture is more crispy than rock-solid. It’s like eating deep-fried pasta without the trouble of setting up a deep fryer.

Where Did They Start?

Like most TikTok trends (we see you, baked feta pasta), pasta chips didn’t originate on the app. According to Today, TikToker and food blogger Emily Chan, aka @bostonfoodgram, found the recipe on Delish before sharing her version on the app in April. From there, it spread like soft butter on a piece of toast—her video now has 2.1 million views, and there are more than 700 million searches for #pastachips on TikTok.

What kind of pasta should you use?

Any pasta shape can be turned into a pasta chip, but you’ll want to choose short, easily dippable shapes over long noodles (unless you want to eat crunchy strands of spaghetti—you do you). Some highly chippable shapes include:

  • Rigatoni
  • Ziti
  • Penne
  • Farfalle
  • Medium shells
  • Fusilli

What should you season them with?

Most of the pasta chips seen on TikTok are coated with Parmesan cheese, but you can go even further with dried spices and herbs. Your flavor options are as endless as your spice cabinet, but we suggest:

  • Salt and pepper
  • Italian seasoning
  • Garlic powder
  • Everything bagel seasoning
  • Ranch seasoning

What should you serve them with?

Sure, you could belly up to a bowl of plain pasta chips, but they’re even better when served with a dip. Need inspiration? Look no further:

  • Marinara or tomato sauce
  • Pesto
  • Ranch dressing
  • Whipped ricotta or feta

How to make pasta chips in the air fryer:

8 ounces pasta (such as rigatoni or ziti)
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
¼ to ½ cup grated Parmesan
Seasoning of choice
Dip, for serving (optional)

  1. In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the pasta until al dente or according to the package directions. Meanwhile, set an air fryer to 400°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, toss the pasta in the olive oil, Parmesan and the desired seasonings.
  3. Lightly grease the air fryer tray or basket. Working in batches, add the pasta to the air fryer and cook, stirring occasionally until the pasta is golden brown and crisp, 10 to 12 minutes.
  4. Serve with a dip if desired, such as marinara, pesto or ranch dressing.

How to make pasta chips without an air fryer:

If you haven’t hopped on the air fryer train, you can still make pasta chips in a regular oven at 400°F for 10 to 15 minutes. They won’t get as crunchy, but you can spread the noodles onto a lightly greased cooling rack inside a baking sheet to help them crisp evenly. (Reason number 1,000 to get an air fryer?)
