Where to Find the Best Pie in San Francisco (for Thanksgiving and Beyond)
Turkey may be the centerpiece of your Thanksgiving dinner, but let’s be honest: Everyone’s really waiting for the desserts. Instead of toiling away in the kitchen trying to perfect your pie crust, leave your sweets to the experts this year. We rounded up the top ten places to get the best pie in San Francisco. Your guests will thank you.
1. Banana Cream Tart at Tartine
Pumpkin, apple and pecan are Thanksgiving’s usual suspects, but if you’re looking for something a little different, place an order for Tartine’s banana cream tart. Rumor has it that baker Chad Robertson tinkered with the recipe for years before it was perfect. Expect velvety custard with chocolate shavings and a layer of caramel. And if you do want to try your hand with this one at home, you can find the recipe in Tartine’s latest cookbook, Tartine: A Classic Revisited.
600 Guerrero St.; tartinebakery.com. Preorder online; pick up by 5 p.m. on November 27.
2. Chocolate Crust Pumpkin Pie at Pietisserie
Chocolate and peanut butter aren’t the only perfect pairing. Oakland shop PieTisserie got creative with a Thanksgiving classic and paired pumpkin pie with a chocolate crust for a match made in holiday heaven.
1605 Second Ave., Oakland; pietisserie.com. Preorder online; pick up November 24 to 28.
3. Apple Rosette Pie at Wholesome Bakery
Let’s hear it for the prettiest apple pie we ever did see. It’s also the most mouthwatering—freshly sliced apples baked with cinnamon and spices, topped with crumble and drizzled with homemade caramel. Did we mention that it’s also gluten-free and vegan? Trust us, you won’t even miss the gluten (or butter).
299 Divisadero St.; wholesome-bakery.myshopify.com. Preorder online or purchase in-store.
4. Ginger Pear Pie at Kahnfections
It’s no surprise that Kahnfections has a stellar lineup of classic French pastries and old-school American desserts—baker Judy Kahn cut her teeth at Tartine and Sandbox Bakery. This year, she’s shaking things up for Thanksgiving by offering a ginger pear pie in addition to the classics. Expect in-season pears combined with tart cranberries and ginger, topped with homemade streusel and candied ginger. We’re sold.

5. Chocolate Bourbon Mousse Pie at Bi-Rite
The team of bakers at Bi-Rite agree that pumpkin, apple and pecan are must-haves during the season, but all of their favorite holiday moments have also included a little bit of chocolate. The result: a decadent chocolate bourbon mousse pie with a flaky pastry crust and whipped cream—the perfect complement to a mug of post-feast coffee.
6. Sweet Potato Pie at Arizmendi
Arizmendi’s pizzas and pastries might get all the hype, but the pies at this employee-owned co-op with locations all over the Bay Area deserve equal credit. Double check with your local shop, but sweet potato, apple cranberry and pumpkin cheesecake are usually on deck. Whatever your choice, you can’t go wrong.
Multiple locations; arizmendibakery.com. Preorder in-store or by phone by November 18; pick up by November 27.
7. Salty Honey Walnut Pie at Three Babes Bakeshop
Pecan is classic, walnut is unexpected. This year, try Three Babes Bakeshop’s signature pie—a true original featuring toasted walnuts and finished with honey and a dash of fleur de sel. Pick up your pie from their brand-new brick-and-mortar Mission shop, where the team will be cranking out thousands of pies for Thanksgiving.
8. Sugarpie Pumpkin Tart with Candied Sage at Marla Bakery
Make your pumpkin pie extra special this year by ordering from Marla Bakery’s dynamic husband-and-wife duo. Pick up your pie and be sure to say a bittersweet (see what we did there?) goodbye to Amy Brown and Joe Wolf and their beloved Balboa Street mainstay, which closes for good on November 27.
3619 Balboa St.; marlabakery.com. Preorder online; pick up November 27.
9. Coconut Cream Pie at Black Jet Bakery
Cut all the Thanksgiving richness with a light, fluffy coconut cream pie from owner and pastry chef Gillian Shaw. She aims to please with her creative coconut creations and really delivers on this pie, filled with vanilla bean pastry cream and chunks of caramelized coconut macaroons.
10. Pecan Pie at Revenge Pies
There’s nothing like sweet revenge—and by that we mean the pecan pie from Revenge Pies. (Sorry, we couldn’t resist.) Here, you’ll get a classic with a twist: a pecan-packed pie made with sass using the shop’s signature butter vodka crust.
