The Rise of Canned Wine

Things that some may find tacky: boxed wine, wine “yokes” and improper glass-holding etiquette. But a vino trend that’s no longer gauche--well, at least among more casual sippers--is wine in a can.

Francis Ford Coppola has been doing it for years with its Sofia sparkling wine, the pinnacle of girliness with an adorable pink can and attached straw.

Union Wine Co. The Oregon-based vintner offers 12.7-oz. cans of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, both of which scream, “Bring me to a backyard barbecue.”

Flasq makes half bottles of Merlot, Chardonnay and Cuvée Blanc packaged in cool aluminum canteens, which are perfect for a lazy picnic in the park.

Free Flow Wines takes it one step further with wine by the keg, which is essentially a giant can and meant to be served on tap at your local bar or restaurant (not at your little brother’s frat party).
