Coffee in a festive cup is all well and good. But let’s talk about the drinks that really matter this time of year: cocktails. Whether you’re grabbing a few post-work or just craving something stiff and cinnamon-y, here are the bars to belly up to now and what to order at each one.

“Grandma Got Run Over by a Punch Bowl” at Punch Bowl Social

At the brand-new entertainment complex in Schaumburg, not only can you play a game of family bowling; you can also share a bowl of holiday punch with your peeps. With the best name ever, the bourbon-based drink tastes like cinnamon and apples.

1110 American Lane in Schaumburg; 224-836-9080 or

“You Serious Clark?” at Duck Inn

Playing off what is perhaps the greatest Christmas-movie line ever uttered (let’s take a moment), Duck Inn has a creamy rum cocktail laced with minty flavors. Most importantly: The stiff drink is served in a Marty the Moose glass mug. Seriously.

2701 S. Eleanor; 312-724-8811 or

“The Nat King Cole” at Beef & Barley

First, we love a drink that gets us humming this classic tune. But the ingredients--especially a syrup made in house from roasted chestnuts--take the cocktail from nostalgic to downright delicious. Also, please note the cute chestnut garnish.

3001 N. Ashland Ave.; 773-248-0990 or

“Tom and Jerry” at Sparrow

The Gold Coast’s new jewel box of a rum bar serves its Tom and Jerry in an old-fashioned mug. Made with warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla, the classic drink has a texture that’s like eggnog but a little lighter. (There’s also a healthy amount of brandy.)

12 W. Elm St.; 312-725-0732 or

“The Pom Fizz” at Your Living Room

Party pro Debi Lilly of a Perfect Event sent us her secret, no-hassle recipes for holiday cocktails. And guys, this is pretty big stuff. You know how grapefruit juice and vodka is one of the most refreshing combos ever? You can make the drink party-ready by adding two ingredients: mint and pomegranate seeds. The whole mix tastes delicious and looks like mistletoe in the glass.
