Boar hunting, mushroom foraging, kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) growing... Things get wild in the hills above Healdsburg. And now’s your chance to get in on the action.
As part of Hands On Healdsburg--50 days of winter programming aimed at bringing locals and visitors to wine country during the off-season--Relish Culinary Adventures is offering a Mushroom Foray in the forest (because, folks, you do not want to try this at home).
Chef and longtime forager Elissa Rubin-Mahon shares the fundamentals of edible wild mushrooms before leading groups to a secret location in the hills (you won’t be blindfolded, but you will be sworn to secrecy). After an hour in the field, Rubin-Mahon examines what everyone has gathered to see what’s edible. (Helpful to know: Ninety-eight percent of what you find won’t be.)
The event ends with a four-course mushroom lunch--think candy-cap bread pudding, porcini flatbread and wild rice with black trumpet mushrooms--complete with wine pairings. She’ll even cook up any edibles the group has gathered (chanterelles, most likely) to enjoy with lunch.
Make haste--this event sells like ’shroom cakes.
