If there’s one thing we know to be tried and true, always and forever, it’s that our beloved denim will never let us down. From our trusty jean jackets to our favorite pair of lived-in jeans that we almost never wash (emphasis on almost), a good pair is a must-have staple in your capsule wardrobe. If you’re wondering what styles we’ll be seeing everywhere come September, check out these five fall denim trends, from a modern take on an old favorite of our past to the chicest way to wear non-blue jeans.

These 9 Fashion Trends Will Rule Fall 2023 (Plus 2 We’re Ready to Retire)

1. Cuffed Hems

We’re calling it: Cuffed hems are on the rise. Fashionistas like Monikh and Vogue’s market editor Madeline Fass have recently been rocking the folded hems on repeat and we don’t expect the momentum to slow this fall. In fact, we’re embracing this modern take on this old denim trend of our past with open arms—but we’re skipping the one-inch skinny jean roll this time around. Instead, we’re opting for loose-fitting jeans with a three-inch cuff or more. And the beauty about this style is that it has the potential to lengthen your legs and can be DIY’ed with those baggy jeans you purchased last year. The secret to harmoniously marrying the cropped and elongated look is to make sure that you find a pair of jeans that is loose everywhere around the bottom part of your legs and ensure that the end of the cuffed hem grazes the top of your foot. “I’ll be taking notes from Monikh and wearing a cool, bold belt for a more tailored look,” says PureWow associate fashion commerce editor Stephanie Meraz.

2. Denim Skirts

Denim skirts started making a comeback in 2022. First seen on the likes of Kendall Jenner and Naomi Campbell, the maxi-craze momentum grew over the last year as brand after brand like Reformation, Mango and Abercrombie & Fitch began to drop their own take on the skirt. And when Miu Miu debuted the micro mini that nearly broke the internet, it was only a matter of time before the more abbreviated denim skirts broke free. While it might seem like we’re back in the throes of our questionable closets from the aughts with the mini revival, we’re still seeing midis and maxis dominate the fashion scene. To reiterate: You don’t have to adopt the mini like Taylor Swift did this summer if the trend brings back the emotional damage from your denim’s past. If you do opt for a midi or maxi length, consider finding one with a slit or other modern detailing to keep the vibe fresh. And if you’re feeling bold enough for a mini, we suggest styling it with a crisp plain white or graphic T-shirt for a classic ensemble.

3. Embellishments

ICYMI, we’re ready to say good riddance to quiet luxury and set our sights on loud garbage. While there will always be room for a timeless and classic staple silhouette, there’s something to be said about loud, glamourous jeans. Think: beads, studs, knots, buttons, embroidery and other embellishments that major fashion houses like Chanel, Alaïa and Dolce & Gabbana have incorporated in recent denim designs. Spunky, fun and full of personality, this fall denim trend recently seen on guests during Copenhagen Fashion Week is surprisingly easy to wear. The key here is to remember that the jeans do all the talking for you, so less is more when it comes to styling your look. A plain black blouse, black pumps and a statement-making coat, like the one pictured above, is all you need to nail that chic fashion week look.

4. Skinny(er) Denim

When Gen Z nixed skinny jeans over two years ago, some millennials feared their slim-fit faves would never be in style again. Fear not, though, because “…skinny-er denim is definitely on the rise,” predicts fashion stylist and creator of the STYLISTCHECK Elisabeth Kassab. Look for jeans that are “tight on the leg with a little straightness on the bottom. For example, Khaite has been doing an amazing job on this denim trend with the Danielle, Abigail and Vivian style denim.” Lean toward more of a cut that combines straight, skinny and a true-to-size fit. As Kassab puts it, some of us are moving on from the oversize, roomy fit and sticking to a tailored silhouette that can be styled over or tucked into a heeled boot with ease in its place.

5. Foil Wash

If you’ve frequented your fair share of concerts, from Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, then you’ve seen that foil wash is en vogue for 2023. In fact, it wasn’t that long ago when the Zara metallic pants went viral on TikTok, garnering 151 million views. Fall 2023 is all about that vintage-inspired washes and daring metallics, minus the Saturday Night Fever flairs of course. From silver and gold to an olive green or dusty brown acid wash, all foil wash shades are welcome. Try pairing the fall denim trend with one of your go-to seasonal staples, like a cashmere sweater or wool coat. (Bonus points if the item happens to be a fabric it’s opposite.)

One Trend to Retire: Low-Rise Jeans

Can it be? Has the time come to for the controversial low-rise trend to take a back seat? To bluntly put it, Kassab has had enough. “I think low-rise denim will get retired this season. I’m over it and I think so is everybody else,” says the celebrity stylist. And it makes sense to lean towards a more covered-up style as temps begin to drop, particularly styles that don’t leave your midriff on display and cut you off in the middle of the hips, creating the illusion that your legs are shorter than they are. “It’s all about a classic denim style.” Noted.
