The classic turtleneck—a must-have, a staple and a trusty option for the cold winter months. Whether you prefer a chunky version for maximum coziness or you’re in search of a thinner model to layer under a sweater vest or sweatshirt, there are tons of options to choose from. Plus, we caught up with celebrity stylist Liv Schreiber for her tips on how best to style your turtleneck of choice.

Meet the Expert

Liv Schreiber is a celebrity stylist and influencer.

How Do I Style a Turtleneck?

According to Schreiber, there are many facets to styling a turtleneck. For example, if you’re headed to work she suggests layering “a cashmere turtleneck with an oversize blazer, followed by a trench or peacoat, with jeans and boots.” Another option? “For a date, try a turtleneck with jeans and high boots, followed by a cropped moto or jean jacket,” she tells us. It’s easy to fall into a full-on neutral look for winter, but Liv loves a good pop of color. “Get colorful with it! Wear a fun contrasting color to make your eyes pop. Deep purple is great for green eyes, orange for blue eyes and green for hazel eyes,” she advises.

What’s One Trend We Should Avoid in 2023?

There are a ton of ways to style a turtleneck, but there’s one we’re kind of over for the time being, and Liv concurs: wearing chains over a turtleneck. She mentions that infamous photo of The Rock is “engraved in my memory,” and we don’t disagree. Leave this look to ‘90s The Rock, we’ve got you covered with other styles to try out.

Ahead, 14 turtlenecks to add to your cart this winter.
