Best Mock Neck Sweater
Bury us in J.Crew cashmere. It’s incredibly soft, oh-so warm and absolutely chic. What more could we ask for? And we’ll be the first to admit it, sometimes cashmere can get too stuffy, like when you’re riding on a packed train or wearing five layers of clothing. But this 100 percent cashmere sweater is sleeveless, making it a gamechanger item to own when you want to add a few more layers or simply let your armpits breathe. It even comes in black and a dreamy camel, too. One reviewer is thinking about purchasing a second sweater, saying “[I] had this in my cart [and was] on the fence, then my local store received them. I tried it on and it is gorgeous. It did run a little big for me. [I] tried both a medium and a small and bought the small. [It’s made with a] heavy knit cashmere, so this should last for a while! Much heavier than the normal crew necks J.Crew has all the time.” Another buyer agreed, noting its weighty, luxurious feel but recommending sizing down, as it runs big around the bust and armpits.
Best Wide-Leg Jean
We’re suckers for good denim, so when we saw this denim trouser, we knew we had to have it. These high-waist, wide-leg jeans run full length and pool around your feet dramatically, so if you you’re a fiend for a denim and boot pairing, this is your pant. And in case you might be wary about the length fitting your short, medium or tall length, fret not—J.Crew offers three fits (classic, petite and tall) and sizes that range from a size 23 to 37. They’re made with 99 percent cotton and one percent spandex, so they’ll have a comfortable stretch and give to them. Great news: These are machine-wash friendly, so caring for them will be a breeze, unlike your designer pair that threaten denim ruin if you dare toss them in with your weekly load.
Best Formal Dress
Whether you’ve been invited to a myriad of fall weddings or are attending an autumn soiree for work, you’re going to need a classy dress that’s timeless and can withstand the seasons hanging in your closet. Enter: this stunner from J.Crew Collection. Made with the brand’s lightweight organza fabric, the silk material will feel extremely smooth, luxurious and have a gorgeous sheen that’ll catch the light as you sashay. The classic black drop-waist dress has a fitted top and flowy skirt that bubbles out just below the hips and keeps its dramatic shape thanks to that stiff organza. And we love that it comes in a midi length, as this can easily transition from cocktail to formal attire in a heartbeat.
Best Long Sleeve Basic T-Shirt
Allow us to introduce you to your new favorite fall T-shirt that’s made from a breathable 100 percent cotton. This traditional crewneck cut is one of the brand’s staple basics, with a fitted bodice and long sleeves that’ll keep you warm on those brisk days. With four neutral colorways to choose from, one reviewer wasn’t satisfied with just one the one, saying, “I have this shirt in several colors and it the best T-shirt I've found so far. I initially received these as a gift in a size small…the fit on the small was tighter than I like, but I kept them to wear under other shirts, so a tight fit was fine. When I want to wear the shirt on its own, I get a size medium and it fits perfectly. It is a long and lean classic tee shirt, which I like. The quality is nice too. [And] these shirts also hold up well in the wash.” We’re sold.
Best Pajama Set
Whoever said you can’t wear white after Labor Day didn’t see this matching PJ set from J.Crew. It has the coolest menswear-inspired silhouette that makes the shirt and pants fit slightly loose and oversize, so if you’re the type of sleeper that doesn’t want fabric to cling to your body while sleeping, this is your set. Bonus points if you’re a hot sleeper, because the cotton fabric on this number is from J.Crew’s Better Cotton mission, which helps “cotton communities survive and thrive while protecting and restoring the environment,” per the brand. We also can’t get over the navy piping, and if you want something other than white, this also comes in a true navy and light blue color.
Best Penny Loafers
ICYMI, loafers are going to be one of the shoe trends you’re about to see everywhere this fall, especially in neutral colors like this weathered black pair that is made in Morocco. And these J.Crew lug sole penny loafers are a classic style to own whether you’re new to the loafer game or a seasoned owner. They’re slightly chunky, have a leather upper and are a great option to wear to work or with a fall dress of your choice. All you’ll need is some long socks and your fit is complete.
Best Slip Skirt
No fall wardrobe is complete without a silk slip skirt, and the Gwyneth style is modest and sexy at the same time. This ‘90s-inspired midi is stunning when styled like the model above, with just a simple white tank top and minimalist jewelry, but it can also be dressed up with a dramatic blouse or draped over some high-knee boots. We love how this one features an elastic waistband, so you won’t have to worry about the top of the waist slipping (pun intended) or rolling as you sit, stand, walk or what-have-you. Did we mention that the Gwyneth comes in countless colorways, too? That’s right, if the black isn’t speaking to you, they have a bright chartreuse or a Barbie papaya option, to name a few.
Best Crochet Sweater
Just because summer may be over come September, doesn’t mean you have to store away your crochet sweaters. You may live in an area that doesn’t cool off until late November or you may have an upcoming vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on the itinerary, but either way you’ll be needing this sweet tangerine knit to accompany you. “I wore this sweater on a night boat dinner ride in Newport,” says one satisfied reviewer. “It is a quality crochet sweater [that keeps] the chills away yet [allows] a breezy coolness through!” Even though this is true-to-size, it has a super relaxed fit that hits right at the hips with wider holes along the sleeves that’ll give you some ventilation. However, one reviewer did note that her usual size was a little too snug for her liking, so if you’re looking for sweater with a little more breathing room, we suggest that you consider sizing up one from your usual.
Best Straight-Leg Jeans
We had to include another jean option because one just isn’t enough. Mark our words: This J.Crew pair is a keepsake that’ll withstand seasonal trends. It has a mid-rise fit that hits just at or slightly below the belly button, depending upon your torso-to-hip proportions. And it’s fitted at the hip and thigh then slightly tapers off into a relaxed straight-leg cut that’s super chic to wear with heels or over booties. The denim is made from cotton, but it also contains a trace of elastane, so you can expect it to have some comfortable stretch. We know that we said this classic style can defy the trends, but fashion stylist Elisabeth Kassab recently told us that this type of ‘skinny-er’ denim is on the rise right now. We’re not surprised.
Best Slip Dress
In case you’re looking to give the aforementioned Gwyneth slip skirt a break, we have just the right dress to rotate into your weekly ‘fit lineup. It’s this gorgeous maxi slip dress in a beautiful navy, and it features a short-sleeve and fitted drapey silhouette that accentuates the curves. Plus, it has a sexy V-neckline that’ll look great on women who have both small and big boobs. It’s made from a luster crepe fabric that’s so sleek and smooth against your skin and has the most luxe sheen to it that’ll have that navy catching all the light. Our only qualm with it is that it requires a trip to the dry cleaners, but we’ll have to overlook that because we can’t pass on this must-have.
Best Striped T-Shirt
This darling striped T-shirt is exactly what we’re missing in our wardrobe. J.Crew took its best-selling mariner jersey customers couldn’t get enough of and added feminine, frilly bell sleeves that have the sweetest eyelet trim. This small but extremely flirty and fun detail makes what’s normally a basic long-sleeve T-shirt that much more elevated and easier to dress up if you want to break free from your casual styling. Oh, and it’s made from 100 percent cotton that’s extremely lightweight, durable and easy to care for.
Best Barn Jacket
This fall, PureWow editors are predicting that the barn coat will be the new trench coat. It’s classic, durable, practical and rustic. Take this Heritage barn jacket, for example. The sleek, traditional coat is made from 100 percent cotton that contains a weatherproof waxing, has a couple of patch flap pockets, a corduroy collar, snap closure details and a hidden zip, too. If Kate Middleton doesn’t already own this exact item, then we’re certain she has one just like it. TLDR? This is the trending jacket you’ll want to reach for on the rainy days.
Best Work Pant
Polished throughout with a slight flare leg, these chic pants are purportedly extremely comfortable, thanks to that polyester blend and the brand’s famous four-season stretch that’s essentially a, “super-comfy fabric that never loses its shape,” per the brand. They’re high-waist and feature a flattering front seam down both legs that’ll look professional for an important work meeting and super elegant dressed down, too.
Best Ruffle Blouse
Whether you’re on the hunt for another work top or you’re searching for a fancier version of your favorite tank, this J.Crew blouse is a top contender. This polyester cutie has a soft, round neck and dramatic layers of ruffles adorning the short sleeves, covering the tops of the shoulders. We love that it’s extremely versatile and can be styled in numerous ways, like tucked into some black trouser shorts (seen on the model, above), with work pants or with your favorite pair of blue jeans for a dashing weekend ‘fit.
Best Cardigan Set
What’s better than a cashmere sweater? A cashmere sweater and tank matching set, of course. And this cozy number from J.Crew is near the top of our fall wish list. It features a cropped sweater tank top that has thin straps and an elastic, ribbed waistband at the bottom, adding more shape. Plus, that fitted top will look so good when paired with the matching cardigan. The sweater has a loose, boxy fit that drapes nicely over your shoulders and three button closures for when you’re not wearing it undone.
Best Trench Coat
Finding a trench coat is no easy feat. It needs to be polished, classic, the right shade of khaki, double-breasted…the list goes on. As soon as we laid our eyes on this relaxed Heritage style, we knew it was a keeper. Machine-washable, this trench coat has everything you’re looking for on your long list of qualifications. Made from 100 percent cotton, this style features that traditional notch lapel, button closures and even has a belt to cinch the waist and create that hourglass figure, or you can choose to leave the belt dangling behind you. It’s truly all in the details here. There are functional buttons at the cuffs and pockets too (because there’s nothing worse than owning a jacket with no pockets). It’s important to note that the jacket is unlined, but that just makes it that much more lightweight and easier to pack when you travel.
Best Pleated Shirt
Can you sense a theme here? We adore a fancier version of our usual everyday shirt because it really does all the hard work for us. And this pleated blouse manages to be subtle and declaring at the same time. It’s designed with dainty eyelet details along the hem of the short sleeves and bottom of the blouse. What’s more, it has a relaxed, easy fit that isn’t too snug, so this will look great opposite some straight-leg jeans or with a mini skirt and boots.
Best Knit Vest
Let’s face it, you can’t wear your summer linen vests forever. Good news: This J.Crew cable-knit sweater vest is the perfect transitional option for your fall wardrobe. Not to mention, it’ll look impeccable with your gold jewelry, thanks to the gold button closures. The shrunken number is made from 100 percent cashmere and features a cable-knit design throughout that we love. It’s “Cropped, preppy and chic,” says one J.Crew reviewer. “Throw on some jeans, heels, gold earrings and it’s an effortless showstopper! [I] bought an XS and it’s slightly loose, but I would not feel comfortable with it being anymore snug. The cashmere is wearable now in the evening, and who can resist crest buttons—not me. Be aware it is very cropped, in my opinion, but I have a long torso and don’t mind showing a bit of skin.” That being said, other reviewers did note that it tends to run slightly small, so we suggest sizing up one for a looser fit that you can layer easily.
Best Smocked Dress
Associate fashion commerce editor Stephanie Meraz admittedly has a difficult time shopping for fall dresses that run neither too hot nor too cold. But this J.Crew dress checks off all her boxes. “When I look for fall dresses, I want fitted, smocked, comfortable, flirty and something that’ll look great with high-knee boots. This button-up mini dress is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s in the sweetest black and white gingham design and has this frilly detailing along the long sleeves (which I appreciate come the cooler weather), hem buttons and mock neck, too. And talk about drama! That flare is everything. And if you know me, you know I run hot always and will sporadically fluctuate in body temperature at the drop of a hat, so the fact that this is made from 100 percent cotton, is mini and still manages to be covered enough in case my body turns to ice is a dream.”
Best Mary Jane Heels
Mary Janes are having a major moment right now, especially in the form of flats. But these slingback heels were too good not to include. Made in Morocco, these elegant leather shoes have a structured square-toe and that beloved, classic Mary Jane strap detail. We’re obsessed with slingbacks, too, because they offer unbelievable support, so you can walk easily knowing that your heel won’t slip off your foot. But don’t just take our word for it. One reviewer says, “This shoe is a winner! The leather is lovely and the shoe itself is very well designed. It’s a very comfortable shoe. I think it would be an easy shoe to add detachable crystals or bows to and give the shoe a lot of different looks.”
Best Boxer Short
“I bought [these boxer shorts] for a recent trip to Mexico and I cannot say enough great things about them,” writes one J.Crew customer, who purchased two additional pairs after her first. “I actually wore them as shorts…they are great to pull on over a swim suit after the beach or pool. [They’re] light and airy so they dried quickly and are also 100 percent cotton, which is a huge plus for me. They don’t necessarily look like sleep shorts, so I think you could pull them off to wear all day on a beach vacation, or something similar. They have pockets and the cute three-button detail on the front, which was a nice touch. I usually wear a size 26 in pants or go for small in bottoms but bought in XS and they are perfect—roomy and not tight but not too big.”
Best Crewneck Sweater
What’s warm and fuzzy all over? No, not your blanket. We’re talking about the cropped crewneck sweater from J.Crew. This versatile cotton-blend sweater is slightly cropped, hitting just at or slightly above the belly button, and has folded cuffs at the short sleeves. Psst…besides this crisp white, it also is comes in cyan blue, magenta and black. If you ask us, we’ll be wearing this almost every day this fall with no shame. Bring on the outfit repeating.
It’s no secret that PureWow readers adore a shirtdress, especially one that’s cinched at the waist and looks incredibly polished. J.Crew recently collaborated with Parisian designer Marie Marot on a capsule collection that meshed menswear-inspired pieces with influences from the South of France that you’ll see in the cuffs. And we are sensing the southern shore influence in this navy and white striped stunner. Made from 100 percent cotton, this number will be a great dress to wear on warm fall days. And it'll look darling with a sweater thrown over it.
“I bought this one for its clean, classic style [and] I like the pristine white collar and large cuffs,” says one reviewer with an hourglass figure. “I think the dress runs slightly large. For me the upper part was definitely oversize, but if I would have gotten a smaller size, the dress would have been too tight over the hips,” so for that reason, we suggest you stick to your usual size if you have hips. “The material is light cotton poplin, perfect for hot days and the dress is not lined (and does not need to be). There is a small, embroidered emblem on one of the cuffs and the slits make it fun and summery,” she adds. Her only qualm is that it’s a tad pricey.
Best Wool Blazer
We may be saying goodbye for now to our oversize blazers, but that doesn’t mean we must store our collection away for the season. In fact, we’re adding this Parke blazer to cart immediately. It has a structured fit that isn’t too snug or roomy, and it’s made from a stretchy wool that comes from one of Italy’s oldest mills, according to the brand. One reviewer, who was contemplating buying the blazer for some time before going for it advises, “Just buy it. It fits true-to-size and wears very well throughout the day. [It has] just the right amount of stretch and doesn’t wrinkle. The jacket AND pants are lined—something a lot of manufacturers aren’t doing anymore…For reference I am 5’7, 141 pounds and ordered a size 4 in the jacket.”
Best Cashmere Sweater
“I’ve had my eye on this cashmere V-neck sweater for some time,” admits Meraz. “I usually stick to a black, brown and white color palette when it comes to clothes, but there’s something so luxurious about J.Crew blue that I need to get my hands—err body—on. And let’s talk about that relaxed fit that I’m obsessed with. It’s cropped and slouchy, making it a no-brainer option for layering, and I can’t wait to drape this over my shoulders while traveling and channel my inner Coastal Grandmother.” What’s more, this top-rated cashmere sweater comes in seven additional colors, from a soft peony pink and classic heather gray to a bold papaya orange that’ll compliment your pumpkin spice latte so well.
