Ask Alyssa Amoroso to define day-to-day life running her brand, Publyssity.com, and she’ll tell you: “It’s so much more than posting pretty pictures,” she says. “I’m the CEO, CFO, social media manager, marketer, publicist and beyond. It definitely keeps me on my toes.” And with a robust range of content to cover—including fashion, beauty, career and travel—she counts herself lucky that her nine-to-five allows her to focus on her passions. We caught up with Alyssa to chat about her tips and tricks (go-to Instagram filter included).
On the beauty trick she swears by. “I’m all about getting eyelash extensions in lieu of wearing eye makeup. If you go to a good place, they last about a month and for that entire month you don’t need to wear mascara or eyeliner. Something is just so nice about waking up looking put together and without all of that black gunk on your face. You literally look like you #wokeuplikethis.”
On something no one knows about her. “Honestly, I’m kind of a tomboy. I tell people this and they laugh, but 90 percent of the time, I’m wearing no makeup and have chipped nails. I’m the son my dad never had—he calls me to get the cable company on the phone or to fix the computer. In fact, I’m quite handy. I can install IKEA furniture like no other.”
On her go-to photo editing app. “I use the A6 filter in VSCO for all of my photos. You have to purchase it for about $8, but I use it every single day. People are always asking me how I get my feed to look so uniform and that’s how. Find one filter you love and stick with it for consistency.”
On the best piece of advice she’s ever received. “Persistence is key. I’ve lived most of my life by this. In fact, it’s how I landed my first job—I hounded them for two years—and it’s how I scored most of my internships in college. Plenty of people just apply to jobs online and mask themselves behind the online form, but you stand out when you go above and beyond to show how badly you want it. Brands turned me down, sure, but you better believe I was back following up again a few months later to try again. I will keep going until I achieve my goals.”
