Wear your workout clothes all day and look cool
The 6 Commandments of Athleisure
Athleisure--wearing workout clothes out of the gym--is a big trend in L.A. But it’s often tragically kitsch (sorry, Day-Glo leggings) or boringly plain (head-to-toe Lululemon: snooze). We stopped in at three new workout apparel shops, Ragdoll Los Angeles, Theory+ and the newly renovated Nike Santa Monica Place, and devised six new rules for making it work.
Thou shalt heel thy sweats
Stash a pair of strappy sandals in your workout bag or the trunk of your car to put on with your sweatpants. And while you’re at it, consider sweats with cute details. We love this zippered pair ($169) from Ragdoll Los Angeles.
Thou shalt not don boring leggings
Why settle for humdrum basic black when you can wear camo-print leggings with zippers ($95) from Theory+. Pair with a striped top for maximum effect.
Thou shalt choose a neutral running shoe
Want to wear your sneakers all day? Then don?t choose an impossible-to-match color. Instead opt for the off-duty-model sneaker of choice, the Nike Roshe One ($115), in black and white. Extra points for keeping them immaculate.
Honor thy sexy lingerie, and keep it showing
A bit of lace peeking out of a tank, like this animal-print style ($79) from Ragdoll Los Angeles, will distract everyone from your sweaty face.
Thou shalt cross-dress
Stay with us here: There?s a micro-trend toward wearing oversized men?s basketball shorts in place of a skirt. We love the funky and lightweight feel of Nike Hyper Elite Power shorts ($55). And when you?re done with the culotte look, you can just hand them down to the man in your life.
Remember thy neon, but keep it classy
Karlie Kloss looks super fly in her workout outfit with just a little bit of neon peeking out. (She could swap the trainers for ballet flats and be ready for a café lunch.) We like the similarly acid-hued Balance S tee ($65) from Theory+.
