The 10 Shoes That Everyone Will Be Wearing in 2016

This year in footwear news

Flashback to last year: We were just getting over the fact that our T-strap sandals were replaced by flat slides and our riding boots got the crop for ankle-skimming booties. But it’s a new year, and while we're still in love with those trusty kicks, we can’t wait to hop around in some brand-new styles in 2016. Here, 2015 shoe trends we still swear by and a few fresh pairs we can't wait to get our toes into.

Flat Slides

Whether open- or closed-toe, these babies are here to stay. If it’s got a wide vamp and an open back, you’re on the right track to comfy chic. Our favorite way to rock 'em? With our culottes, as if you’d have to ask.

Heeled Mules

The ’90s go-to is making a comeback in a big way. Both chunky- and stiletto-heeled versions were seen on nearly every recent runway and will likely hit your local mall soon. They work well with cuffed jeans and shift dresses alike.

Get the look: Urban Outfitters ($59); Topshop ($130); Tory Burch ($350)

Peep-toe Booties

We totally understand if you’re still in love with your ankle boots, and we’re not suggesting you ditch them. But if you’re looking for the next big update? It’s--you guessed it--more toes.

Get the look: Forever 21 ($35); Nine West ($119); Stuart Weitzman ($575)

White Sneakers

Athleisure, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways. Although stark white kicks have been popular for some time, we bet their prominence will grow even more in the coming year. Don’t be afraid to test them out with skirts and dresses (even though you’ll always come back to leggings, of course).

Get the look: Adidas ($90); Michael Kors ($125); Rag & Bone ($325)

Lace-up Pumps

As much as we adore a ballet flat, there’s just nothing like a sexy pump. Our obsession with the heeled version of these lace-up numbers stems from their versatility to dress up a pair of jeans just as well as their ability to upgrade our day-to-day workwear.

Get the look: Missguided ($60); Sam Edelman ($120); Saint Laurent ($795)

Heeled Mary Janes

Another workwear staple, this take on the classic Mary Jane features a chunky heel and skinny strap. Pair with a pencil skirt or wide-leg trousers for an instant power outfit.

Get the look: Banana Republic ($148); Diane Von Furstenberg ($375); Miu Miu ($895)

Kitten Heels

For those wary of sky-high heels, these guys are a lifesaver when it comes to dressing up. Slingbacks, sandals, pumps and slides all work, or go for a pointed toe for added oomph (and to elongate the leg).

Get the look: Nina ($79); Ann Taylor ($128); Christian Louboutin ($675)

Flatforms

These platforms made their street-style debut last year, but have more staying power than we anticipated (and aren't just for the millennials). Think of these as an update to your wedges, but way more comfortable since your weight isn't balanced on the balls of your feet.

Get the look: ASOS ($48); See by Chloe ($360); Sophia Webster ($550)

Anything With Tassels

Hello, embellishment du jour. We can't get enough of the swingy suede garnish on everything from gladiators to heeled sandals.

Get the look: Steve Madden ($80); Loeffler Randall ($395); Aquazzura ($785)

Anything With Pom Poms

The same goes for these fluffy bobbles. Bright colors and different sizes add festivity to regular gladiators, and we don't expect this fabulous find to fade anytime soon.

Get the look: ASOS ($36); Dimitra's Workshop ($155); Dolce & Gabbana ($2,395)
