Think of this look as the 21st-century jumper. Not just any old dress will do. Make sure that your top layer has a high neckline, a roomy cut (again, to balance out the tight sleeves beneath) and a weighty fabric (wool, tweed, suede or leather is ideal).
Similar to the sleeveless shell look (only a wee tougher to execute), this concept requires just the right sleeve length. Find a colorful, mod top where the sleeve hits right above the elbow. Layer it atop a jersey turtleneck. Scrunch the turtleneck sleeve to where it hits right below the elbow and voilà.
An old-school closet staple that needs no introduction, the turtleneck is the secret weapon of proper winter layering. It’s been on a recent style hiatus but has thankfully returned--just in time for Polar Vortex 2015.
Before you ask: Yes, all the cool New York girls are wearing them.
Here’s how to make your turtlenecks feel modern and chic.
