How to Wear Athleisure: 6 Tips from a Hollywood Stylist

Top Hollywood stylist and busy working mom Karla Welch knows her sartorial stuff, whether she’s dressing Lorde for a music video (a vintage disco dress and Adidas Sambas) or Oprah for a cover shoot (Gucci moto jacket). We quizzed her—hard—about athleisure while she walked us through the collection at Six:02, a go-to boutique for chic workout gear. And she rewarded us with brilliant advice on how to wear athleisure while still looking chic and age-appropriate.

How to Layer (Stylishly) for L.A. Winter

1. Proportion Is Key

Don’t wear all-tight everything, Welch cautions. And don’t forget what works on your body—if you like loose clothes, choose a workout pant over leggings and a boxy sweatshirt over a stretchy top.

Get the look: Acne Studios sweater ($390); Athleta pants ($79); Fila shoes ($65)

2. A Comfy T-shirt Is Everything

Inspired by her own go-to working basic of choice, Welch designed her own line of T-shirts based on a classic men’s crew shape that’s been tailored for women to fit under jackets and layer under dresses.

3. Resist The Head-to-toe

The Olympics were great, but they’re over now, and so is the matchy-matchy track suit—so even when you’re wearing the same brand, mix it up with different colors, textures and silhouettes.

Get the look: Ivy Park bodysuit ($50) and joggers ($80); ASOS jacket ($44)

4. Layer Up

A big jacket over a skinny legging is flattering on everyone, and basically the most comfortable outfit next to your bathrobe.

Get the look: Nike leggings ($35); Puma jacket ($119); Under Armour sneakers ($60)

5. If You Love A Color, Make It Work

Welch (and her clients) don’t wear a lot of color off the red carpet, but she’s no fan of avoiding bright hues. Therefore, if pink glitter sneakers capture your fancy, pair them with muted hues and be happy every time you glance down.

Get the look: Converse ($45); Tretorn sneakers ($85); Puma ($100)

6. Crop Tops + High Waisted Bottoms = Totally Doable

That small slice of abdomen around your ribs? It’s the most likely part of your midsection to appear toned, says Welch, and so it’s an age-appropriate and flattering way to wear this silhouette.

Get the look: Hanes x Karla sweatshirt ($80); Mother hi-rise jeans ($228)
