The One Thing Women Can Do to Prepare Themselves for Breastfeeding Success

You know what they say: Nothing can truly prepare you for parenthood. Well, the same rule applies when it comes to breastfeeding. But there is one thing you can do that will make that whole feeding-a-person-from-your-boob thing a heck of a lot easier the first time—actually seeing another mom breastfeed. In person.

“The best thing that a woman can do to prepare for breastfeeding before the baby comes is to watch babies nurse,” says International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Leigh Anne O’Connor. She recommends finding a breastfeeding support group in your area (La Leche League is a great resource) and watching a demonstration, but you could also spend an afternoon observing your bestie in action or even check out an instructional video on YouTube. No matter how you do it, just see how it’s done, up close and personal.

Not only will watching other moms help make that first feed seem less daunting, but it will also hook you up with some handy experts that you can reach out to when it’s your turn. Win-win.
