Some occasions (say, your best friend’s VERY IMPORTANT wedding) call for buying a brand-new fancy dress. Others (your husband’s cousin’s engagement party) do not. And yet, you still don’t want to wear just any old thing in your closet.
Enter Stylend, a new site that allows you to rent high-end dresses from stylish local women at a fraction of the cost of owning them (usually 10 percent of the retail price).
You browse the frocks according to your size--major brands include Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone, YSL and Max Mara--and request the one you want to borrow by sending the owner a message with the date you’d need it.
Sound like Rent the Runway? Here’s where things get different: Because the marketplace is so much smaller and SF-based, someone from Stylend will bring you the dress to try on that day, along with a few other options that suit your shape and style request. You reserve the one you want for four days (or up to a month) and when it’s ready for pickup, a Washio “ninja” will retrieve it to be dry-cleaned ($11 fee) and returned. We rented a flowing Parker number for $30 that garnered multiple compliments at a birthday dinner.
The other big difference: You can rent out your own dresses too. Cha-ching!
